| What
is TEFL? |
| TEFL
is a name that people use to describe the profession of
teaching English as a foreign language; it is often confused
with being a qualification. |
| |
| What
certificate should I choose? |
| When
choosing a recognised course one must be careful in selecting
a reputable centre and moreover an internationally recognised
certificate. The two main certificates for teaching English
are the Cambridge CELTA and the Trinity college TESOL.
Essentially both certificates are equal and hold the same
status. |
| |
| CELTA
stands for: Certificate of English
Language Teaching to
Adults. |
| |
| TESOL
is an acronym for: Teaching English
to Speakers of Other
Languages. |
| |
| What
do I need to get onto a CELTA/TESOL course? |
| Most
applicants should be native speakers of English and hold
a university degree. Occasionally applicants without a
degree are accepted because they have prior teaching experience.
If English is not your first language and you want to
do the course, you will need to demonstrate a high level
of English. A Certificate of Proficiency of English (CPE)
is normally deemed as acceptable. |
| |
| About
the course |
| The
cost of a course can vary from centre to centre but are
anything from £700 ($1,300) to £1,300 ($2,400).
Courses are part-time, usually over a year or full-time
usually a month intensive. Centres that offer 2/3 day
courses or online certification are normally not accepted
by schools as recognised certificates. |

their career in this field. The Trinity college equivalent
is called LTCL DipTESOL, though it is recognised it is
not as popular as the former. Normal course pre-requisites
are an initial teacher training certificate with a minimum
of two years’ teaching experience. The duration
of the course can be anything from two months full-time
to one year part-time. Costs are around £2,000 ($3,600). http://cambridgeesol-centres.org/centres/teaching/index.do
